Take Action with Clean Wisconsin
You don’t need us to tell you that frac sand mining is booming in Wisconsin. And its expansive growth is putting our air, water, natural resources — and our health — in danger.
Right now, the Department of Natural Resources is beginning a study of frac sand mines’ impact on Wisconsin’s environment. We’re happy to see the DNR take this proactive step, but to make sure the study is as comprehensive as possible, we need your help.
Through Monday, April 20, the DNR is accepting public comments regarding the study. The DNR has developed a list of topics to include in the study and while this is a good start, it appears to lack some key considerations, such as:
Cumulative impacts: What are the impacts caused by a high concentration of mines in one area?
Secondary impacts: What are the additional impacts that Wisconsin can expect from the frac sand mining boom related to changes in population, land use, air quality from trucking, rail demand or other foreseeable effects?
Alternative methods or controls that the industry could adopt to minimize impacts to the environment
With many crucial environmental issues at stake and to ensure that DNR considers all possible impacts and alternatives, we urge you to review the proposed issues and offer comments of your own here.
Thanks for all your support and hard work for Wisconsin’s environment.
Best,
Amanda
