Hi friends — I met some of you at the State Capitol several weeks ago with the LSP lobbying day — I created a petition on signon.org that I would like to invite you to sign and share with others, if you are inclined. Below is the background and a link to the petition. Thanks for your time and energy.

Though I live and work in St. Paul, I care about the issue of frac sand mining because of my 20 years as a public health professional and 15 years of bicycling in SE Minnesota.

Numerous experts and state agencies (eg, MN Department of Health, MN Pollution Control Agency) have raised serious concerns about the potential health effects of industrial frac sand mining to nearby residents and tourists. Silicosis, lung cancer, asthma, contaminated drinking water, and increased vehicular accidents are devastating long-term consequences to risk for short-term financial gain.

That’s why I created a petition to The Minnesota State House and The Minnesota State Senate, which says:

“Pass legislation that provides a moratorium on any new or expanding frac sand mining operations until a Generic Environmental Impact Statement (GEIS) is completed and meaningful state level standards are established.”

Many Thanks!

Courteous, concise comments relevant to the topic are welcome, whether or not they agree with the views that predominate here. Long rants proclaiming the infallibility of your own views or favorite ideology will not be posted, neither will repeated attempts to hammer on a point already addressed, nor will comments containing profanity, abusive language, flame-baiting and name calling. Please indicate precisely what you are blogging about. I just got a post from ? E-Mail ? which said: "Is this going to be OUR furture??. I have no idea what they were referring to and no way to contact them. This is why we prefer comments that are signed by actual persons who leave their E-Mail address (it won't be published) so they can be contacted if questions arise.
